Secret Firmware Update Lets Late ’08 MacBooks use 8GB RAM
You may get surprised to hear that OWC has discovered a secret firmware update enabled access to have 8GB of ram on late 08 Mac Books. This is the first time we have experienced a news under covered after such a long time and nobody knew about this trick. There were some updates made in 2009 as well, I remember one for reducing the buzzing noises coming in from optical drives and people got over this issue very easily.
We aren’t still sure if whether or not this change would affect the other parts of the machine but it did change memory addressing and that’s for sure. If your Mac book had been installed with this later update then you would have been enjoying Snow Leopard on 8GB of ram, this is more like your Mac Book would have been bestowed with wings to fly.
It was held unfortunate for the users of Mac Book because this machine wasn’t showing this update as a different program and that’s why people kept ignoring it assuming it as a previous update. I’m sure users must have not gotten notified with this update if their iOS firmware had been already turned to the older version.
We are giving you a list of Apple Mac book models on which this discovery works.
● Mac Book 13.3″ 2.0GHz and 2.4GHz
● Mac Book Pro 15″ 2.4GHz (All)
● Mac Book Pro 15″ 2.53GHz model w/Express Card Slot (Late 2008)
● Mac Book Pro 15″ 2.8GHz model w/Express Card Slot (Late 2008)
If you’re still confused upon whether or not you’re carrying a right model then go to your BootRom version and check if it is “MBP51.007E.B05” for Macbook Pro and “MB51.007D.B03” for Macbook. It sure is not a problem if your system is not showing these codes and now you just have to simply download a secret firmware update from here.
- For MacBook Pros (MacBookPro5,1)
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8 - For MacBooks (MacBook5,1)

Once you’re done with this update, make sure that you’re running your system on Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and accelerate your ram up to 8GB.
