How To Boost Your Wi-Fi Network Signal And Increase Range Using DD-WRT

You can make the most out of your wireless Internet connection but it could drive you crazy when not getting connected to the service and creating interruptions for you ; probably out of range and other speed issues. I’m about to disclose a solution to this problem and only a software called ‘DD-WRT’ withholds a cure. This program can be used to extend your home networks by only using a router and performing other tweaks as well.
How to boost your signal :
Open up the web browser and locate it to the configuration page of the router (Select Wireless>Advanced Settings). Now you will be viewing a large detailed list of settings, do not hurry. There is a setting called ‘TX Power’ which actually represents the measurement of broadcasting power that your antenna uses to transmit Internet signals. The defaulted value is most likely to be around ’70′ of this unit and your router wouldn’t mind if you’ll make some modifications in this value, let’s extend it to 150. Pushing this router value to the maximum limit could create intense heat and the aftermath would be, it’ll self-destruct. I’d reckon to keep it on 100 and play safe and sound at the moment.
On the same window, you will see ‘Afterburner’ settings. You can enable this option to get some boost but only if the nature of your router supports such feature. If it doesn’t support then things may go gradually slower at your end.
Another setting which you need to customize by yourself is Blue tooth Coexistence mode. Using wireless and Bluetooth connections all together could give you troubles within your Internet speed and to avoid such a thing, you may want to turn this feature on and let your router be running on Coexistence mode.
How to use a spare device as a repeater :
Mostly, what people do is they own another sort of wireless router when ever something goes wrong with the previous one they had, in this case if you’re having a router which is not being used, it is best to perform this whole process of customizing settings accordingly and feel the difference yourself. By doing so, you can actually use your previous router as a repeater that can give some boost in wireless range for a new area of your house or a yard.
Go to Wireless, click on Basic Settings and the mode should be changed to ‘Repeater’ You will be viewing two difference sections on the screen. The one will be containing the Wireless Physical Interface and the other half will have the Virtual Interfaces. It goes like this, your main router is supposed to be sending signals to the physical interface. After connecting the SSID, the network mode must be configured. Now you can choose yourself, either you want this router to be connected with the previous network or the one which vary from it. Next up, you may want to plug in the new SSID for the repeater in order to get the access point. This thing is totally dependent on your location.
When you’re done with it, do not forget to save up your settings in the first place and then head over to ‘Wireless Security Page’
Now, enter your router’s security settings and then configure details for the repeater signals. Please, check if the router and the repeater are connected like this status > Wireless.
Click on the Site Survey button located down below the page. You’re going to find the SSID of the main router and press ‘Join’ Now, put the repeater somewhere around the house where it could transmit signals perfectly and give you a good Internet service.
How to use the repeater as a wireless receiver :
Just in case, your system is deprived of having a wireless receiver, you can actually use your repeater for the same purpose with assistance from SS-WRT firmware. Make your way to the settings like what we did previously ; (Wireless>Basic Settings). Simply, switch to Repeater Bridge mode, you can do that by connecting any other device into router’s ethernet ports. It is best that you turn it out when not being used or else it would cut off your bandwidth.
